We have stayed here twice this summer. The location is excellent, close to Custer and Rushmore. There nice thing about this property is the availability of full hookups at a reasonable rate.
Most of the pictures for the reviews here are focused towards the back of the property but do not reflect reality. Look at the satellite images closely.
We had one of the best family camping experiences of our 18 years together at this beautiful and cozy campground. The hosts are a couple of the most kind folks you'd ever want to meet. They take pride in their beautiful land and take care of the facilities. The land includes rv sights, cabins, and tent sights. We tent camped here for a week, using the campground as our hub to explore the area. After seeing some of the other campgrounds in the area with kitschy gift shops and run down pools, we were glad to have found such a gem amongst the touristy junk. The bath house had laundry facilities as well as nice hot showers and was clean. The trails lead you back to secluded views of mountain cliffs and three ponds, one with paddle boats! Simply stunning! I would say the secluded natural surroundings and the kind, approachable hosts would be the true selling points for this campground, something the touristy places didn't have. If you like camping and exploring, you'll love this campground. And don't forget the VERY reasonable prices!
We couldn't have found a better place to call home for 3 nights (October 5/6/7). Gary is so kind and his property is STUNNING - I seriously could have stayed indefinitely. It is the perfect location to unhook and drive to Custer State Park, into the Black Hills National Forest and downtown Custer is 8 minutes away. We traveled to Mt. Rushmore from here (about 20 min) and Crazy Horse can be seen from the driveway! We took a sunrise and sunset hike around the property - it was perfect with our big dog, this was his heaven. Saw several deer, foxes and beautiful birds. The laundry on site is a great help ($2 a load), and full hookups at this price ($30/night) we felt like we hit the lotto. Wonderful host, location and property. We wouldn't stay anywhere else!
This is a very nice, very relaxed place. The proprietors are great folks who work hard to take care of you. Met lots of other great campers there too. I definitely want to go back! However, you should not go there because then I might not get a spot next time. Try the public campground just to the North ;-)
CONS: The property is a multi use facility with homes, junk cars, and refuse littering the area spoiling the view.
We enjoyed out stay at this campground on June 18 2017 and wish we had more time to visit. We had been at Mt. Rushmore and we needed a campsite for one night only, so we could visit Crazy Horse the next day. There is a small sign along the highway near Crazy Horse for this campground. The owners are extremely friendly and welcoming. The tent sites are large and pleasantly situated in a grove of mature trees, with just a short walk to the bath-house. The restroom/showers are clean. The push-button style shower took a little bit to warm up, but provided water at the right temperature once it got going. There is a laundry room on site. I couldn't believe how inexpensive it was to stay in a tent-site: only $15. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring and grate, and some firewood neatly stacked next to it. The owner invited us to look around and enjoy the paddle boats on the lake, but we were short on time. Although this campground is very close to the highway, it was very quiet and peaceful and as an added bonus, we sat outside after dark playing cards and there were no bugs. If I'm ever in this area again we will definitely stay there.
PROS: Decent basecamp location to explore the Black Hills at a reasonable rate.
My only complaint is that there is an abundance of junk strewn about spoiling the atmosphere. Junk cars and other questionably useful items like old equipment is strewn about everywhere.
In their defense this is somewhat normal for the area. You will find the most beautiful properties in the Black Hills filled with broken washing machines, old bicycles, and discarded tires.
