Custer State Park is one of America's finest parks. It ranks with some of the best national parks. It is large and many varied. It has great wildlife viewing opportunities, some of the best in the country for antelope, bison, wild turkey and prairie dogs.
Absolutely beautiful! We didn't even plan on driving through this park and I am so glad we did! The drive has a lot of curves and narrow one lane bridges and roads built right through the rock. Saw tons of buffalo, sometimes right on the side of the road. I only wish I had known of this park in advance to plan more time there.
The lodges are really nice and quite different from one another, thereby offering very different experiences.
Great drive through Custer state park. Plenty of great places to stop and take in the scenery and wildlife. Plenty of Buffalo, Pronghorn, and Burros. Bring some treats along to "Pay the Toll" to the Burros to pass through some of the areas as they do like to stand and block the road.
The Needles Highway scenery is superb. The Iron Mountain Highway is very different but equally alluring. The vistas from Mount Coolidge are great.
If you like to hike, the opportunities are numerous.
This is a nice place to camp with beautiful views. We made reservations for a camp site over the phone and payed with a card. Upon arrival there was someone in or spot. It was late, dark and getting ready to rain so we happened to find any empty spot to setup our tent. The next morning we went to the rangers station to inquire about or accommodations and it turned out to be a squatter at our designated area. They comped us a night at let us stay where we were. The park staff was very friendly and helpful. I would stay here again. Watch out for the Bison crossing the road.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. We drove here from Wisconsin. Well worth it. Wildlife was amazing on the wildlife loop. Saw bison, pronghorn, prairie dogs, burros, whitetail deer and much more. I recommend buying food for the begging burros before you go into park at local gas stations because yes you can feed them. Make sure if you bring peanuts for them that they ARE UNSALTED. I also recommend driving the wildlife loop early morning or early evening. That is when we saw the most animals. Scenic drives were breathtaking and the tunnels on the roads are very neat anf awesome to see. We stayed at one of the pit toilet campgrounds in a tent. It was great. There was only 5 people in the whole campground. Super quiet and the campsites are right in beautiful nature. You can also get campsites that you can hike to. All of the park employees were so amazingly nice. They would stop just to chat or would have all the info you needed if you had a question. We will be returning next year.
